On Saturday, April 2nd, people gathered at the south end of the church building to build our amazing children's garden! Pictured above are our 10 adult helpers and 2 of the children who were there. From right to left are: Nigel Salway, Dave Hall, Landon Gaertner, Tammy Gaertner, Rod Ashley, Terry Page, Terry Gates, Kenadie Williams, Jordan Williams, Dave Williams, Kurt Muehmel, and Kolton Muehmel.
Our program for preschoolers (and their parents) will begin on Tuesday, May 24th at 10:00 a.m. and run for 1.5 hours each Tuesday until the end of summer. The program will include gardening as well as activities such as stories and games, all supporting the theme of gardening, where our food comes from, environmental responsibilities and sustainability. On Wednesday, May 25th, we will start our elementary students program after school from 4:00 pm to 5:00 p.m. This program will also continue throughout the summer.
You will see that at one end of the raised garden bed, the height is approximately 30 inches, while at the other end, it is only about 16 inches, so that it is easy for toddlers as well as older children to reach. We built the garden out from the wall so that the children can access it from both sides.
Maegan Krajewski is the director of our children's garden program, and she comes to us with experience from her work with the North Central Community Gardens. Check this LINK to read about some of Maegan's work.
This program has been made possible by a grant from the Anglican Foundation and their Say Yes! to Kids initiative.
